Screw Back Earrings: For Active Women
It is not that long ago when women who without pierced ears could wear two basic types of earrings. One was the clip-on and the other was the screw back. Both types had to be very tight so that the earrings did not fall off. Earrings have come a long way since then. The most useful are the modern screw back and partial screw back. Perhaps the most interesting are the Cartilage double earrings.
Vintage Screw Back
The vintage screw back earrings were one piece, with the decorative part at the front connected to the screw back with a curved bar going under the bottom of the earlobe to the backside of the earlobe. This connection allowed a small screw mechanism, working horizontally to be screwed into the back of the earlobe directly behind the decorative front part of the earring. This mechanism tightly screwed on, kept the wearer from losing the jewelry. It was quite a painful way to wear earrings, but at that time, pierced ears were not nearly as popular as they are today.
Modern Screw Back and Partial Screw Back
The modern term, screw on back earrings refers to jewelry for pierced ears. These work on stud earrings and reduce the chance of losing the jewelry. There are two types, the full screw back and the partial screw back.
- Full Screw Back
The full screw variety’s posts, tend to be a bit thicker than normal pierced earrings, and are cut like a very small screw, without the point. The backs are also threaded, and actually screw onto the post. Some people find these uncomfortable to wear, because of the thicker post. For young children and for toddler earrings, screw back types are popular, for good reasons.
- Partial Screw Back
Partial screw back earrings allow the user to push the back onto the post as normal, but to remove the earring; the back has to be unscrewed. These tend to be more comfortable to wear than the full screw variety. The posts are only threaded at the very end, so that they do not need to be quite so thick.
Cartilage Double Earrings
Cartilage double earrings, sometimes called chain earrings, have two posts, one for the lobe and one for the cartilage hole, connected by a chain. Besides the fashion statement, the nice feature of these earrings is they are much harder to lose. Both tend to be screw back earrings to make sure they stay in place.
Screw back earrings have come a long way since they referred to a one piece earring for non-pierced ears. The new modern screw back is a great way to limit earring loses. These do take a little longer to put on, but the benefits are substantial.
